Bob Leone first broke into the music industry in 1976 as the principal songwriter and keyboardist for the RCA recording group, Flame, whose producer was the legendary Jimmy Iovine. Jimmy also produced albums for John Lennon, Lady GaGa, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, U2, Patti Smith, Dire Straits, Gwen Stefani, The Pretenders and Iggy Azalea, among other international superstar acts. Jimmy was also Flame’s co-manager.
Bob has been critiquing songs professionally for more than 35 years. He conducted weekly song critique sessions for the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), where he served as National Projects Director from 1981 to 1988. During this time, Bob was frequently asked to conduct group critique sessions for other songwriter organizations and universities, including the Connecticut Songwriters Association (CSA), Northeastern University and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, considered by many to be the best music college in the country.
In 1988, Bob began his 18-year tenure as the National Projects Director for the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) and its parent organization, the National Academy of Popular Music (NAPM). In 1989, he created and organized a highly successful songwriting workshop program. Over 3,100 songwriters participated in 259 workshops, including Stefani Germanotta (Lady GaGa) and Lizzy Grant (Lana Del Rey). Classes ranged from beginner levels to master levels and were conducted by some of the most successful songwriters and music publishers in the industry.
In 1990, Bob created the Songwriters Hall of Fame Songwriter Showcase program. Between November 1990 and October 2006, he produced and hosted 59 of these critically-acclaimed standing-room-only events, which were held four times a year at the most renowned New York City music venues, including The Cutting Room.
As many as 150 to 200 CD submissions were reviewed by Bob for each quarterly showcase. From these he chose eight artists or bands, each of which performed two original songs. These slots were extremely desirable to songwriters because these events were always attended by music industry professionals, including record company executives, music publishers, record producers, directors of the three performing rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI and SESAC), as well as established performing artists and hit songwriters who were seeking new songs and collaborators.
Many of those featured at Bob’s events were offered publishing, production and record deals as a result of their appearances. Many had their songs placed on film and TV soundtracks. Every genre of music was represented at these events, including pop, rock, R&B, rap, country, soul, hip hop and dance. Performances ranged from artists accompanying themselves on a solo instrument to full bands with backup singers and dancers.
These showcases, considered by industry insiders to be the best in the country, were consistently praised in music industry publications, including the most respected trade publication of them all — Billboard magazine, the “bible” of the music industry.
More than 500 artists, some of whom traveled to New York from countries outside of the U.S., including the U.K., participated in this unique program. Many who were unknowns at the time of their performances are now international stars. Stefani Germanotta (Lady GaGa), Lizzy Grant (Lana Del Rey), John Stevens (John Legend) and Rachel Platten (“Fight Song”) were among them.
In 2015, Bob was invited to be a featured guest at a group song critique session sponsored by Recording Artists Development (RAD). RAD conducts these listening sessions several times a year and it is here that music industry professionals critique and evaluate songs written by RAD members. He was honored to have been voted the best of the many participating music industry professionals who critiqued songs.
Inspired by this accolade, Bob has been doing private artist/writer consultations via Skype ever since.
